"I want to write a research paper" is a goal with no obvious first step — which is exactly why most people who say it never start. I built this guide as the map I wished I had: a straight line from "I don't know how to read a paper" to "I have a structured, evidence-based paper of my own." Here's how to actually walk through it instead of letting it sit as a PDF you meant to get to.
The one idea to hold onto
The goal is not the PDF at the end. It's learning to think like a researcher — question assumptions, check what's already known, design a fair test, and report what the evidence actually shows, even when it's not what you hoped for. Everything in the guide serves that mindset, not the paper itself.
Working through the 10 stages
- Stages 1–2 (Research, Read Papers): Don't try to write anything yet. Spend real time here — read 5–10 papers in one topic you're genuinely curious about. Use the three-pass method in the guide (title/abstract/conclusion → methodology → equations/details). Most people skip straight to pass three and get lost; resist that.
- Stage 3 (Problem): Take your "weak framing" idea and rewrite it as the guide's example shows — turn "I want to build X" into "How does changing Y affect Z, measured how, compared to what baseline." If you can't fill in all three blanks, the problem isn't defined yet.
- Stage 4–5 (Literature, Research Gap): As you read, keep a simple table: paper, dataset used, baseline compared, metric used, one limitation. After 5–10 papers, patterns jump out — that's where your gap usually is, sitting in the "limitations" column.
- Stage 6 (Hypothesis): Write one sentence, in the exact shape the guide gives: "Adding X to baseline Y will improve metric Z without [cost]." If it isn't measurable, it isn't a hypothesis yet.
- Stages 7–9 (Method, Experiment, Results): This is the longest phase and where most first-timers underestimate the time needed. Reproduce a baseline first — actually get an existing method running on your data before touching your own idea. Then run the ablation/comparison experiments listed in the guide, not just your best version.
- Stage 10 (Paper): Only now do you write, using the standard section order the guide lays out (abstract → intro → related work → methodology → experiments → results → discussion → conclusion). Writing is fast once the evidence already exists — most of the "writer's block" people feel is really unfinished stage 7–9 work.
A negative result — your idea didn't beat the baseline — is still a real result if the experiment was designed fairly. Don't chase the conclusion you wanted; report what happened.
The realistic first-project path (in the guide's own words)
Choose one focused problem, read 5–10 closely related papers, find one specific gap, reproduce a baseline, implement your change, evaluate fairly, analyze honestly (including failures), then write. That's the entire checklist — resist the urge to make your first project bigger than that.
Common ways people get stuck (and the fix)
- Stuck at "I don't know what to read": Pick literally any recent paper in a topic you like, then follow its "related work" citations backward. That's a reading list generated for free.
- Stuck at "my idea feels too small": Small, well-tested ideas are exactly what the guide recommends for a first paper. A fair, reproducible comparison is a real contribution.
- Stuck at "the results didn't work": That's stage 9, not a failure — write down why, honestly, and that becomes part of your discussion section.
